Championing Sustainability

Leading by example, we integrate sustainable practices into our operations, setting a precedent for responsible living.

What We Do

The organization aims to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices, particularly among children and young adults. Through innovative initiatives, Planet Patrons empowers the

Afforestation

Through our flagship Birthday Forests Initiative, we aim to increase forest cover, foster income-generating activities for partner schools, and impact environmental education to children. We collaborate with local communities to ensure the long-term sustainability of our afforestation efforts, promoting indigenous species and traditional conservation practices. Our approach combines modern scientific methods with local knowledge, creating resilient forest ecosystems that benefit both the environment and surrounding communities.

Environmental Education
and Awareness

We aim to promote environmental education and awareness in schools and communities across Kenya. Develop comprehensive educational programs that raise awareness about environmental issues and sustainable practices. Implement initiatives to sensitize communities on pollution issues and their impacts. Create engaging materials and activities to foster environmental stewardship among youth and adults.

Women, Children, and Youth Empowerment

We mainstream gender in climate action, foster tree nurseries, and create safe spaces for marginalized communities to participate in climate-related activities. Our initiatives include leadership training programs specifically designed to empower women and youth in environmental decision-making processes at local and national levels. We also provide mentorship and networking opportunities to support the development of young environmental entrepreneurs and advocates.

WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Initiative

We provide water harvesting systems to schools, equip nursery points with water tanks, and promote sanitation and hygiene practices. Our WASH programs integrate environmental education, teaching communities about the link between water conservation and ecosystem health. We also work with local artisans to develop and promote affordable, eco-friendly sanitation solutions that reduce water pollution and improve public health.

Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security

Our focus is on promoting innovative and climate-resilient farming practices, implementing waste reduction programs, and increasing organic farming. Additionally, we promote value addition initiatives, including the use of inferior foods, increasing profitability, and reducing food wastage and harmful gas emissions from waste.

We collaborate with agricultural experts to develop and disseminate locally adapted, drought-resistant crop varieties to enhance food security in vulnerable regions. Our programs also include training on post-harvest technologies and market linkages to improve farmers’ incomes and reduce food losses.

What We Address

Kenya faces significant environmental challenges, including:

Deforestation

Since Kenya’s independence in 1963, forest cover has dropped from 10% of the nation to 6%, losing approximately 12,000 hectares annually. From 2001 to 2022, Kenya lost 375kha of relative tree cover, equivalent to an 11% decrease since 2000. This highlights the critical state of forest cover and its implications for biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Biodiversity Loss

Habitat degradation and climate change have caused declines in wildlife and livestock populations. Kenya’s rangelands, covering 88% of the land, support over half of the livestock and 70% of protected wildlife, but face threats from land use changes and climate variability, highlighting the need for urgent conservation efforts.

Water Scarcity

Freshwater resources are diminishing due to unsustainable agricultural practices, illegal water abstractions, and poor resource management, exacerbating the challenges faced by communities. This illustrates the pressing issue of water scarcity in Kenya.

Youth Engagement

With 75% of Kenya’s population under 35, there is a pressing need to involve youth in environmental stewardship to ensure long-term sustainability. This point underscores the importance of engaging young people in conservation efforts.
